Don Arnone received his PhD from the University of Cambridge in 1991. He has worked on Terahertz spectroscopy and
emission for the past eight years in Cambridge, first in the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambrige,
and since 1993 at the Cambridge Research Laboratory (CRL) of Toshiba Research Europe Ltd., where he currently holds
the post of Senior Research Scientist. He is responsible for setting up the Terahertz Laboratory at CRL along with
the Director of CRL, Prof. M. Pepper.
Objectives
High power, all-optical pulsed sources of THz radiation developed at TREL are potentially of considerable commercial
importance for imaging (e.g. in the medical and electronics industries) and spectroscopy (e.g. for environmental
monitoring). TREL has demonstrated the use of THz radiation for imaging in the fields of electrical diagnostics
and biomedicine. Pulsed THz radiation at average powers of several micro-watts allows sufficient contrast to discriminate
between different types of biological tissue, e.g. pork muscle, fat, and kidney, as well as diseased tissue such
as tooth decay and skin carcinoma. TREL is the first group to demonstrate the medical applications of Terahertz
imaging. Work within the THz-BRIDGE project will be focussed on time domain spectroscopy (TDS) of biological samples
and on the assessment of safe exposure conditions for biomedical applications.
Workplan
The TREL group will contribute to all workpackages. 1000 person-hours will be devoted to WP-1 for performing time
domain spectroscopy (TDS) measurements on several biological samples. This will provide an easy method to obtain
spectroscopic information in the spectral range between 100 GHz and 4 THz. A compact THz source and 610 person-hours
will be made available in WP-2.2 to perform additional measurements on human lymphocytes. The same source will
be employied by UNOTT for irradiation of epithelial cell cultures. Finally 300 person-hours will be devoted to
collecting and analysing information for the survey on THz exposure at specific occupational sites (WP-3).
